Holidays and Trips: Poland Holiday 2010

In early November 2010, Keith, his friend Kate and I made a short trip to Gdańsk (one-time Danzig) on the Baltic Coast. We travelled by Ryanair from Birmingham and stayed for three days in the Qubus Hotel, on the river just outside the old city. With one exception, all these photographs were taken on my new Panasonic TZ8 and processed with PaintShop Pro versions X6 or 2019.

I had travelled up the Birmingham on the Friday and stayed the night with Keith. A taxi arrived at Keith's place at eleven-thirty on the Saturday morning and, after a rapid transport through check-in, we had an hour to spare in the departure lounge.

On arrival at Gdańsk airport and passing through the reception formalities, we decided to take a taxi to our hotel, Hotel Qubus. We have yet to find out the significance of the name. Keith and Kate had twin beds in a double room (309) on the third floor overlooking the river.

My room was a similar single room with shower on the fifth floor (502). My only complaint was an insufficiency of pillows and the table lamp by my bed was too well shaded and too low for easy reading.

Having settled in, we set out on a damp evening to look at the old part of town and to find a restaurant for an evening meal. We aimed first at the 'Tawerna', a recommended venue but rather expensive. Round the corner from there is a wide street, now fully pedestrianised, ul. Długa, full of restaurants and eateries. I took a number of night pictures showing lighting and floodlighting. Eventually we chose a small basement restaurant, 'Velevetka', where the food and service were excellent.

Notoriously, Gdańsk was severely bombed by our airforce during the Second World War; so most of what we see now is the result of painstaking restoration and reconstruction.

It was raining a little when we emerged but we wandered further, hunting for milk and chocolate. We eventually found an open minimarket after almost coming to the conclusion that they didn't exist, at least in this part of the town.

On return to the hotel, Keith went to the café and persuaded them to loan us cups and saucers for coffee despite the notices warning that no electrical appliances should be used.
